Cold air incursions, δ18O variability, and monsoon dynamics associated with snow days at Quelccaya Ice Cap, Peru

چکیده
Quelccaya Ice Cap in the Andes of Peru contains an annually resolved δO record covering the past 1800 years; yet atmospheric dynamics associated with snow deposition and δO variability at this site are poorly understood. Here wemake use of 10 years of snow pit and short core δO data and hourly snow-height measurements obtained by an automated weather station deployed at the ice cap’s summit to analyze linkages between snowfall, δO, and the South American summer monsoon (SASM). Snow accumulation peaks in December and is negative May–September. Snow δO values decrease gradually through austral summer from about 17 to 24‰. Surface snow δO is altered after deposition during austral winter from about 24 to 15‰. More than 70% of the total snow accumulation is tied to convection along the leading edge of cold air incursions of midlatitude air advected equatorward from southern South America. Snowfall amplitude at Quelccaya Ice Cap varies systematically with regional precipitation, atmospheric dynamics, midtroposphere humidity, and water vapor δD. Strongest snowfall gains correspond with positive precipitation anomalies over the western Amazon Basin, increased humidity, and lowered water vapor δD values, consistent with the “amount effect.” We discuss ventilation of the monsoon, modulated by midlatitude cold air advection, as potentially diagnostic of the relationship between SASM dynamics and Quelccaya snowfall. Results will serve as a basis for development of a comprehensive isotopic forward model to reconstruct past monsoon dynamics using the ice core δO record.

Snow accumulation measured during 1982-1983 on the Quelccaya ice cap, Peru, was 70 percent of the average from 1975 through 1983. Inspection of 19 years (1964 through 1983) of accumulation measured near the summit of Quelccaya reveals a substantial decrease ( approximately 30 percent) in association with the last five El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) occurrences in the equatorial Pacific. A general discussion is given of climate variability over the last 1500 years as interpreted from two ice cores from the Quelccaya ice cap, Peru. The possible role of climatic variability in prehistory over this period is discussed with emphases on (1) relationships between climate and the rise and decline of coastal and highland cultures; (2) the possible causes of two major dust events record...
متن کاملReconstructing interannual climate variability from tropical and subtropical ice-core records
The patterns and sources of interannual, decadal, and century-scale climatic and environmental variability are of greatest relevance to human activities. Ice-core records from tropical and subtropical ice caps provide unique information about the chemical and physical character of the atmosphere. Annual variations in the amount and chemical composition of precipitation accumulating on these ice...

[1] The published ice core records for Quelccaya, Peru are shown to contain numerous errors in annual layer determination, introduced by the subjective methodology of the original analysis. A newmethodology is presented that aligns and then merges dO sample measurement profiles from the two Quelccaya cores. Absolute dating of the stratigraphy is established by comparison of prominent dust anoma...
